Tips for Finding a Career in Conservation

Education

Having an education is key for finding yourself in a professional career and conservation is no different. Many people in conservation come from a traditional background, having degrees in Biology, Wildlife Management, Ecology, etc.

With that said, there are many opportunities for perspective job seekers that hold degrees in Marketing, Business, Accounting, and Education, just to name a few. Adding certification courses, such as the Journey to Conservation Careers Course, is also a great way to create or bolster foundational knowledge and add to your resume.

Involvement

Become a member of a conservation organization, volunteer, and find and join a local chapter.

Not only will this show a deep commitment to mission but will also increase your network and provide hands-on experience.

Identifying as a member when applying for a position shows a commitment and passion for conservation.

Flexibility

When looking for potential entry level opportunities it is critical to have flexibility in your desired location. Finding a career in conservation can be very competitive and showing a willingness to relocate can provide the job seeker with a much greater opportunity of getting their foot in the door.

Authenticity

The conservation careers market is full of passionate professionals who have a deep connection to the work that they do, personally and professionally.

So, get outside and enjoy all the wonders around you. Connect with others who have a shared love of the outdoor lifestyle, wild places, and conservation at large.

When you walk into that first interview, let your passion shine through and know that you will be working with professionals who have a deep affinity for the work they do.

Internships and Temp/Seasonal Jobs

Internships and seasonal opportunities, coupled with a formal education, prepares a future conservation worker to have on-the-job experience and create relationships with current employees. This will give great insight into the day-to-day tasks of a given position and build a broader understanding of the agency or organization.
